Most of the time it is considered that since windows is installed on your Laptop / desktop, I will not be able to see a website hosted on any other OS (e.g. Linux server). This however, is not true. The Operating System at which your web site is hosted will not have any effect on seeing a website in browser (irrespective of the fact that on what kind of servers that website is hosted).
Why that I should be hosting on Windows Server? If your website needs scripting language which use aps.net / .net language or your need mssql database during development / operation of your website, you need to have a windows server. However, if you are designing.php only website, the type of web server will not matter. You can host it on any server as per advice of your web hosting company.
